Welcome to the Second or Short Session of the 123rd Indiana General Assembly.

The  Indiana General Assembly is a part-time legislature that does not meet year-round. It convenes on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in January. The length of the session varies depending on whether it is a long session or a short session. A long session occurs in odd-numbered years and lasts until April 29, while a short session occurs in even-numbered years and lasts until March 14. During a long session, the General Assembly creates a two-year budget for the state, while during a short session, it focuses on other policy matters.

123rd Session includes Interim Committee meetings.

Legislative News

Organization Day for the upcoming session will be November 21, 2023.

Organization Day is the ceremonial start of the legislative session for the Indiana General Assembly, which is the state’s bicameral legislature composed of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Organization Day is usually held in November, prior to the official start of the session in January. It is an administrative day that allows legislators to meet with their colleagues and staff, arrange committees, swear in new members, and discuss issues for the upcoming session. No legislation is voted on or debated on Organization Day.

The 2023/2024 legislative session will be a short session, as it is an even-numbered year. Therefore, the Organization Day scheduled for November 21, 2023 will not involve any budget-related matters, but rather serve as a preparation for the session that will begin on January 2, 2024. The Organization Day will be streamed live on the Indiana General Assembly’s website, where the public can also access information about the legislators, committees, bills, and schedules. Organization Day is an important day for the Indiana General Assembly, as it sets the tone and agenda for the upcoming session.
